Animal rescue operations in Europe

Overview

Authorities in Spain and Italy have conducted separate interventions to rescue animals from neglect and hoarding.

In Vélez-Málaga, Spain, National Police rescued 61 dogs and cats from a residence following complaints about noise and odors. Officers discovered animals in “deplorable health,” including some kept in darkness inside kitchen furniture. A 53-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of continuous animal abuse, with investigators suggesting she may have been suffering from Noah’s syndrome. The rescued animals are receiving care for illnesses such as leishmaniasis and parvovirus.

In Catania, Italy, State Police rescued 20 puppies and 12 ferrets from a garage in the Librino district. The animals were found in small, dirty cages lacking basic welfare requirements. Veterinarians confirmed several puppies were malnourished. A 55-year-old man was reported to judicial authorities for animal cruelty, and the property owner received a fine for environmental violations.
