Greek municipal animal welfare initiatives

Overview

Municipalities in Greece have launched various programs to improve animal welfare and manage stray and companion animal populations.

In the Kifissia and Marousi regions, a new intermunicipal veterinary clinic has been inaugurated. Established through a five-year agreement and supported by a donation from Lamda Development, the facility is designed to mark, vaccinate, and sterilize up to 1,500 stray animals annually. The clinic also provides emergency care and hospitalization services.

In Kissamos, a separate veterinary care initiative is scheduled for early November 2026. Conducted in collaboration with ZERO STRAY PAWJECT and the ‘Noah’s Ark of Crete’ volunteer group, the program targets livestock farmers and vulnerable pet owners. Services include examinations, parasite treatments, microchipping, and sterilization to promote responsible ownership and prevent uncontrolled breeding.
