Dominican Republic STEM education initiatives
Overview
The Dominican Republic has launched several initiatives to strengthen science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education. The Ministry of Education’s Regional 15 Directorate inaugurated 99 STEAM clubs in various educational centers to foster innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students. Eddy Chávez Placencio, Director of Regional 15, noted that these clubs aim to nurture talent, stating that classrooms hold the nation’s future scientists, engineers, and researchers.
Following these efforts, Deputy Vicente Sánchez Henríquez announced the National STEM Fair, titled SOMOS STEM RD, which took place on November 2 at the Aloft by Marriott in Santo Domingo. The event was supported by Law 89-25, which establishes November 8 as National STEM Day. The fair aimed to address a significant labor market gap where 74% of companies require technological professionals, while only 14% of youth express interest in these fields. This discrepancy has driven up salaries for available talent while leaving vacancies in technology sectors, service free zones, and government digitalization projects.
The inaugural fair provided students with access to scholarships, internships, and certifications. It featured participation from high-ranking officials, including Vice President Raquel Peña, and received support from private sector entities such as Google, Grupo Punta Cana, and Grupo Estrella.
