2028‑29 Cruise Line Expansion Updates
Overview
In late July 2026, Viking Cruise Line announced two new 998-passenger vessels, Viking Leda (service December 2028) and Viking Vega (June 2029), to debut on Mediterranean routes before Vega moves to the British Isles. Both ships, weighing approximately 47,000 tonnes, are being constructed at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Italy. Viking Leda will launch a winter programme in the Mediterranean with itineraries of eight to sixteen days departing from Greece, Italy, and Spain. Viking Vega will initially operate in Southern Europe before repositioning to the British Isles by mid-July 2029, with embarkation points including Italy, Spain, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
Virgin Voyages detailed its 2028 programme, unveiling an Arctic-Baltic season from Amsterdam that includes six itineraries – four Northern-European cruises and two repositioning voyages between Barcelona and Amsterdam. The centrepiece is an Arctic Circle crossing from 14 to 25 August 2028, sailing to 71° N under the midnight sun and featuring a deck-party and onboard ceremony.
The season will be home-ported by the Valiant Lady in Amsterdam for the first time and will call at new line ports such as Bergen, Tromsø, Honningsvåg, as well as Baltic cities including Stockholm and Copenhagen. Virgin Voyages is re-introducing its Summer Season Pass, offering a Central Sea Terrace cabin for two, a $15 daily drink credit, complimentary shore excursions (including an Arctic Circle Discovery), upgraded Wi-Fi, laundry service, a daily Thermal Suite spa pass, priority boarding, and a private champagne breakfast with a reserved viewing area for the Arctic Circle ceremony. Bookings open 14 August 2028.
These announcements illustrate upscale cruise brands expanding capacity with new ships and diversifying routes across the Mediterranean, Arctic, Baltic and Atlantic regions for the 2028-2029 seasons.
