3D-printed student housing development in Denmark
Overview
The Skovsporet student housing development in Holstebro, Denmark, has been completed, representing a major large-scale application of 3D concrete printing technology in residential construction. Designed by SAGA Space Architects and MS+ Arkitekter, the 1,650-square-meter project consists of 36 apartments organized into six low-rise clusters.
Serving VIA University College, the development functions as permanent social housing. The construction utilized a COBOD BOD3 printer and emphasized sustainability through the use of locally sourced concrete and low-carbon materials. Notably, a bicycle shed utilized MEVOcem, a cement-free material that reduces CO2 emissions by 84% for those specific elements.
The project was designed to integrate with the existing landscape, preserving 90% of the site’s mature trees. The construction cost was approximately €1,880 per square meter, which is noted as being below the statutory maximum budget for subsidized housing in Norway. Residents are expected to begin moving into the units, which range from 39 to 50 square meters, in September.
