A Coruña protests against Vox party

Overview

On October 21, violent clashes occurred in A Coruña during a pre-campaign event for the Vox party in the Plaza de María Pita. Protesters targeted the presence of party leader Santiago Abascal, leading to disturbances that included the throwing of stones, chairs, and fireworks, as well as the burning of approximately thirty containers. The unrest resulted in injuries to thirteen police officers, two journalists, and several demonstrators, with three arrests made for public disorder and attacks against authority.

Approximately 5,000 people gathered to protest the presence of the Vox leader, with various nationalist and social groups, including BNG Youth and the Sindicato de Inquilinas, involved in the demonstrations. Government Delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, attributed the violence to a small group of “radical and anti-system individuals,” with some officials specifically mentioning members of the Riazor Blues.

In response to the unrest, political leaders have taken opposing stances. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party (PP), expressed support for security forces and the citizens of A Coruña, stating that such violence has no place in a democracy, while Santiago Abascal condemned the protests as acts of coercion and violence.

Conversely, social and youth organizations, including Galiza Nova, the Sindicato de Vivenda, and Coordinadora da Mocidade Socialista (CMS), have denounced the police response as disproportionate and characterized the events as repression. CMS has demanded the resignations of the Mayor of A Coruña and the Government Delegate, alleging “excessive force” and presenting evidence of injuries sustained by participants.
