Abruzzo cultural and natural heritage preservation

In Abruzzo, local associations and officials are working to promote and protect the region’s cultural and natural assets. The Association ‘I Borghi più belli d’Italia’ for Abruzzo and Molise has proposed a regional law designed to protect and enhance 27 certified villages. This legislative initiative aims to provide small centers with tools to support economic and cultural value, encourage residency, and promote tourism.

The region’s appeal is defined by its diverse outdoor and historical offerings, including the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, the Majella massif, and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga parks. Tourism encompasses hiking routes that connect historical architecture, such as Rocca Calascio, with opportunities for observing local fauna and flora. Travelers are encouraged to visit historic stone streets during the ‘golden hour’ or ‘blue hour’ to enhance the sensory experience.

Recent proposals have shifted toward more radical territory management and economic revitalization. The Direzione Sulmona movement has called for active woodland maintenance and the removal of dry debris to combat forest fires. They suggest a circular economy model where community cooperatives manage undergrowth cleaning and the industrial recovery of fallen wood to create stable employment and prevent depopulation.

Additionally, the Province of Teramo is planning a cultural event titled ‘Uniti per il Gran Sasso Teramano’. Led by maestro Enrico Melozzi, the initiative seeks to showcase local resilience following seismic events and encourage investment. Provincial President Camillo D’Angelo noted the project aims to promote sustainable mountain tourism and support strategic infrastructure projects funded by the PNRR.
