Absa digital finance and crypto custody expansion
Overview
Absa Bank has expanded its digital financial services and institutional cryptocurrency offerings across Africa.
Initially, Absa Corporate and Investment Banking launched Absa Digital Asset Custody in South Africa. Utilizing Ripple technology, the service provides institutional clients with a regulated environment to safeguard digital assets, including Bitcoin and XRP, as well as tokenized real-world assets. The platform uses hardware-based security and deterministic key derivation to manage private keys to bank-grade standards.
Following this, the bank expanded its digital footprint by introducing Absa Next in Kenya. This integrated digital finance ecosystem provides consumers and entrepreneurs with a unified interface for banking, savings, investments, and credit, intended to offer personalized financial management.
Absa Group Ltd. has since solidified its position by launching what it describes as “Africa’s first institutional crypto custody service” in South Africa. This offering targets asset managers, corporations, and non-bank financial institutions. The service currently supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP Ledger, and the USDC stablecoin, with plans for future asset additions. The bank aims to capture the South African crypto market, noting that assets held by the three largest licensed providers were valued at approximately $1.5 billion at the end of 2024. Absa intends to expand access to other client segments in South Africa and is exploring service extensions to other African markets, subject to regulatory approvals.
