A2RL makes European debut in Imola

Overview

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) made its European debut at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola on September 5, 2026. Organized by ASPIRE, a division of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council, the event marked the championship’s first race held outside the United Arab Emirates as part of an effort to establish a global championship for fully autonomous race cars.

The competition utilized Dallara Super Formula SF23 single-seater vehicles (EAV-25 hardware) equipped with cameras, radar, and lidar to navigate the technical track at speeds exceeding 250 km/h. While the hardware is standardized, the racing relies on artificial intelligence and algorithms to manage perception, planning, control, and real-time decision-making without human drivers.

In the 12-lap race, UAE-based team Kinetiz secured victory. Germany’s Constructor Racing took second place, followed by Italy’s PoliMOVE in third and Unimore in fourth. The previous two-time champions, TUM from Germany, finished fifth after experiencing technical issues during the formation lap. Earlier reports of a collision involving cars from the Politecnico di Milano and Unimore were superseded by the final standings of the competitive field.
