Abuja police investigations into fake presidency plates

Overview

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched investigations into multiple incidents involving vehicles using unauthorized or forged ‘PRESIDENCY’ registration plates in Abuja.

On October 20, 2026, police intercepted a Lexus LX570 SUV in the Maitama District. The vehicle featured a concealed number plate inscribed with ‘PRESIDENCY’. The suspect in this case was accused of impersonating a permanent secretary attached to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and was found to be using forged registration documents.

On October 26, 2026, authorities intercepted a second vehicle, a black Toyota Corolla, bearing the registration number M01-997 FG. The driver was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the plate. Police are currently investigating both cases to determine the authenticity of the registration particulars and the circumstances surrounding the allocation of these plates.
