Overview

Following a failed five-day national medical strike led by the National Medical Union (Sinamed), the Hospital General Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu in Paraguay is facing a massive wave of specialist resignations. The strike was initiated to demand salary readjustments, improved supplies, and the formal appointment of temporary staff.

Negotiations with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economy ended without an agreement, as government officials stated that financing the requested 76% salary increase is impossible. Consequently, medical specialists have submitted resignations for 141 of the hospital’s 164 doctors, representing 86% of the specialized workforce. The shortage is critical in several areas, including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Cystic Fibrosis Program, and specialties such as Ophthalmology, Gynecology, and Pediatric Surgery, which have seen 100% of their professionals resign. Sinamed has announced plans to convene an assembly to organize further industrial actions.
