Advancements in AI-driven radiotherapy technology

Overview

Developments in radiotherapy technology have focused on integrating artificial intelligence and increased delivery speeds to improve cancer treatment precision.

In Italy, the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico implemented the Adaptive Linac Ethos, an AI-powered linear accelerator. This technology allows for real-time recalibration of radiotherapy based on a patient’s anatomical changes and tumor evolution during irradiation.

Concurrently, Siemens Healthineers introduced the Accela radiotherapy platform. Designed to enhance efficiency, the system uses NeoArc dynamic modulated arc therapy to optimize dose precision and speed. The platform features a high-speed gantry and AI-supported planning, capable of delivering certain stereotactic body radiation therapies in as little as 60 seconds. Accela is currently undergoing regulatory processes in the United States and is not yet commercially available.
