Developments in thermal imaging technology have focused on increasing efficiency and expanding practical applications in defense and safety sectors.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), working with Amethyst Research and Lancaster University, has created a new detector architecture that is over ten times more efficient than existing designs. By using a thin absorber layer and sub-wavelength structuring, these detectors can operate at temperatures closer to -123°C rather than the standard -193°C. This reduction in cooling requirements allows for smaller, lighter, and more power-efficient cameras suitable for drones or individual soldiers.

In the commercial and security sectors, Teledyne FLIR is utilizing thermal imaging for predictive safety, specifically for early fire detection. Unlike reactive smoke detectors, fixed thermal imaging uses radiometric detectors to identify abnormal heat patterns from sources like overheating lithium-ion batteries or electrical failures before combustion occurs. This technology is being integrated with radar and AI-enabled analytics to enhance situational awareness for critical infrastructure security.

Expanding into defense modernization, Teledyne FLIR OEM has been selected to support the U.S. Army’s Delivering Unmatched Thermal Capability Hastened (DUTCH) initiative. Led by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Critical Technologies and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) C5ISR Center, the program focuses on enhancing next-generation uncooled thermal infrared (IR) sensing. The initiative aims to improve sensor performance while reducing size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C), specifically for applications such as weapons sights, thermal binoculars, loitering munitions, and uncrewed aerial systems.
