AfD political activity regarding COVID-19

In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD, in coordination with the BSW, has proposed the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate the pandemic response. The party claims previous government restrictions were “unjust” and seeks to hold responsible parties accountable. The Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Health has criticized this proposal, describing the AfD’s approach as resembling a “tribunal with a pre-judgmental bias.”

Following recent state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, political tensions have increased regarding government formation. While the BSW has officially ruled out a coalition with the AfD and will not support AfD parliamentary leader Ulrich Siegmund for Minister President, the BSW expressed openness to cooperation on specific parliamentary projects. This potential cooperation includes the establishment of the proposed parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate the handling of the Corona pandemic. The BSW and AfD also share criticisms regarding the media landscape and the representation of Eastern German perspectives in public broadcasting.
