African electricity supply upgrades

Overview

In late June, Madagascar and Senegal reacted to severe power outages by deploying emergency generators, expanding solar capacity and repairing damaged infrastructure. By mid‑July, Botswana and Malawi reported significant progress in domestic generation and inter‑connector projects. On 17 July Madagascar reinstated a nationwide energy emergency after fuel shortages linked to Middle‑East tensions, authorising fuel rationing, price caps and rapid ordinances to keep essential services running.

On 26 July a fire at the HFF power plant on the outskirts of Antananarivo forced the RIA interconnection post offline, leaving large parts of the capital without electricity for more than an hour before power was gradually restored; an investigation into the blaze was opened. The same day a blaze at Chad’s Farcha thermal plant destroyed three generating units, reducing capacity by an estimated 18‑21 MW; President Mahamat Idriss Deby ordered household electricity to be prioritised, with the presidential complex switching to autonomous generators.

These events show that, alongside investments in solar, coal and battery storage, African nations continue to face fuel‑supply shocks and unexpected plant outages, prompting emergency measures to safeguard grid reliability.
