African public health digital and regional initiatives

Overview

Public health efforts across Africa are increasingly emphasizing digital innovation and regional cooperation to address diverse medical challenges.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa has introduced the DIGIT Health Campaign Data Digitization Project. This three-year initiative, supported by the Gates Foundation and the eGov Foundation, aims to modernize the coordination and monitoring of public health campaigns through an open, modular digital infrastructure. The project begins with a pilot phase in seven countries to establish a foundation for regional scale-up.

Complementing these digital infrastructure efforts, regional cooperation is being utilized to tackle specific diseases. In Côte d'Ivoire, the HIV prevention platform ‘À l’assaut du SIDA’ (AADS) is undergoing a redesign with new web and mobile applications to expand its impact. Additionally, the WHO has recognized Algeria for its leadership in promoting health cooperation across the continent.
