Agroecological urban gardening initiatives in South America

Regional initiatives in Argentina and Uruguay are advancing agroecological urban gardening through research, training, and resource distribution.

In Argentina and Uruguay, efforts have focused on botanical research and specialized training. In Argentina, the Secretaría de Asistencia Directa and the Universidad Nacional de Jujuy are evaluating the use of vegetable extracts as growth promoters and phytosanitary protectors for community and school gardens. Meanwhile, in Uruguay, the Intendencia Departamental de Lavalleja has implemented the ‘Sembrar, cosechar y conservar’ program, providing workshops and seeds to residents to improve soil care and water efficiency.

In Argentina, municipal actions have expanded to include direct seed distribution and social economy fairs. In Paraná, the ‘Primavera en el Gazzano’ event facilitated the sale of agroecological vegetables and the free distribution of seasonal seeds. In Goya, the local government implemented the second phase of the Jakaru Porá 2.0 provincial program, distributing 18 varieties of seeds to support self-production and healthy eating in both urban and rural areas.
