Nayef Aguerd transfer to Real Sociedad collapses

Overview

In early August 2026, Olympique de Marseille announced that Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd would join Spanish side Real Sociedad on a season‑long loan with an obligation to purchase. The deal included a €4 million loan fee and an optional €11 million purchase clause, intended to bolster Real Sociedad’s defence and ease Marseille’s wage bill following Aguerd’s €23 million purchase from West Ham the previous summer.

However, the transfer collapsed in mid-August despite a completed medical and an agreement between the clubs. The deal, which reportedly featured a €17 million non-mandatory purchase option, fell through due to a disagreement between Aguerd and Real Sociedad coach Pellegrino Matarazzo regarding return-to-play protocols. While the coach requested Aguerd be capable of playing eight full 90-minute matches starting in September, Aguerd sought a more gradual reintegration to manage his workload following a long injury absence.

The collapse leaves Marseille facing the challenge of managing Aguerd’s high salary. The club continues to undergo squad restructuring to balance accounts, previously looking to move players such as Geoffrey Kondogbia, Faris Moumbagna, Geronimo Rulli, and Facundo Medina. To generate liquidity, Marseille is also considering the sale of high-value players including Amine Gouiri, Igor Paixao, and Timothy Weah. Additionally, defender Leonardo Balerdi has become a target for Italian club Bologna, though Marseille has set a high asking price of approximately €30 million. While Napoli and Al-Ittihad have been mentioned as potential suitors for Aguerd, the club's efforts to offload personnel remain a priority amidst high turnover.
