Aguleri-Umuoba Anam land dispute in Anambra State

Overview

A violent land dispute between the Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities in Anambra State has resulted in loss of life, including a minor and an unarmed individual, and the destruction of property such as the Idigo Palace.

In response, Governor Chukwuma Soludo convened a high-level stakeholders meeting with traditional rulers and community leaders to address the conflict. Following the summit, the Governor inaugurated a seven-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Justice Nkemdilim Izuakor, to conduct an impartial investigation. The commission is expected to submit its report by February 28, 2027. Meanwhile, the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) has urged both communities to utilize Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms and abandon violence.
