Overview

Şahinbey Municipality in Gaziantep has implemented a series of agricultural support initiatives in coordination with the Gaziantep Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.

Initially, the municipality signed a cooperation protocol to distribute 1.8 million kilograms of certified seeds and 2 million kilograms of fertilizer, a program costing 100 million lira with the municipality covering half the expenses. Local officials reported that these long-term efforts have contributed to a 300 percent increase in cultivated land and a significant rise in the number of local farmers.

Following this, the municipality distributed 2,000 tons of subsidized fertilizer to help producers mitigate rising costs. The municipality provided the fertilizer at 13.5 lira per unit, roughly 50 percent of the market price of 29 lira. Mayor Mehmet Tahmazoğlu noted that the timing of this distribution was critical due to international uncertainties and geopolitical tensions affecting petroleum-related supply chains.
