AI adoption and ethical challenges in finance

Overview

The finance and accountancy sectors are experiencing a rapid integration of artificial intelligence alongside emerging operational and ethical challenges.

A report from FPSB India indicates that AI adoption is rising, with 80 per cent of financial planning firms expected to use the technology within a year, up from 60 per cent in 2025. Professionals report that AI enhances work efficiency and may improve access to services for underserved populations, though experts emphasize that technology cannot replace human judgment.

Concurrently, broader industry surveys highlight new pressures. In the UK, finance directors identify inflation and cost pressures as significant challenges, while AI adoption has surpassed talent retention as a primary focus area. Globally, ethical concerns regarding AI have surged, with 61 per cent of practitioners identifying it as a primary ethical issue, compared to 32 per cent in 2024.

Recent data from a PwC Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2026 highlights growing workforce anxiety. The survey, which included nearly 50,000 employees across 48 countries, found that 53 per cent of financial services employees view AI as a threat to their job security. This is higher than the 44 per cent global average for other industries. While approximately 45 per cent of financial professionals report that AI is driving productivity and improving work quality, the sector faces a tension between achieving operational efficiency and maintaining employment stability.

Looking toward 2027, a Deloitte survey suggests a strategic shift for CFOs. Rather than focusing solely on technology investment, leaders are increasingly prioritizing organizational redesign, talent readiness, and data governance. The research indicates that companies focusing only on technology-driven investments are 1.6 times more likely to miss expectations, emphasizing that successful scaling requires high-quality, governed data and cultural alignment.
