AI development and safety initiatives
Overview
The landscape of artificial intelligence is characterized by rapid consumer deployment and evolving discussions regarding safety and oversight. Meta has reported significant user engagement with its Muse personal AI agent, noting that over 10 million users in the US and Canada have activated the service, with approximately 25 percent engaging daily for tasks such as email and calendar management.
In response to technological advancement, leaders are exploring various regulatory frameworks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has proposed models for oversight ranging from an international regulatory body similar to the IAEA to a collaborative structure akin to CERN.
On a practical research level, OpenAI has expanded its safety collaborations internationally. In a first for the European Union, OpenAI signed an agreement with NASK, Poland’s national AI Safety Institute, to conduct joint research. This partnership, led by NASK’s AI Safety Research Center, focuses on identifying vulnerabilities in advanced models, detecting AI-generated content, and assessing risks across different languages to proactively mitigate emerging threats.
This agreement builds upon prior cooperation between OpenAI and CERT Polska, a cybersecurity team within NASK. In July, CERT Polska utilized OpenAI’s cybersecurity models through the Daybreak program to help identify six software vulnerabilities in MikroTik RouterOS, for which the vendor has since released fixes.
