AI health chatbot implementation in South Korea
Overview
South Korean medical and government entities have introduced AI-driven chatbot services to assist with health management.
Samsung Medical Center’s Cancer Hospital launched a KakaoTalk-based chatbot specifically for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The tool assists with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) management by addressing frequently asked questions regarding catheter care, symptoms, and emergency procedures. A preliminary survey indicated a 96% satisfaction rate among users.
Following this, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the Ministry of Science and ICT released the ‘AI Public Health Helper Chatbot’ for general public use. Available 24/7 via the Community Health Survey website, this service allows citizens to monitor chronic disease risks—such as hypertension and diabetes—by inputting physical metrics and lifestyle data. The tool utilizes two decades of national health survey data to provide personalized reports and visual health indicators, though officials emphasize it is for reference and does not replace professional medical diagnosis.
