AI implementation in Catalan local administration
Overview
Local administrations in Catalonia are implementing artificial intelligence to modernize public services and digital administration.
On August 12, the Diputación de Barcelona launched an AI-powered virtual assistant to help city councils access resources and services through its Service Catalog. The tool aims to replace manual searches with natural language processing to improve transparency and accelerate municipal projects. The Administració Oberta de Catalunya (AOC) identified the project as an example of innovation in local administration.
Following this, on August 17, the Mont-roig del Camp City Council introduced LIAM, a specialized cyber-assistant integrated into the OAC 360º service. Available 24/7, LIAM assists citizens and businesses with electronic procedures, documentation requirements, and step-by-step guidance. The municipality noted that the technology is intended to reinforce, rather than replace, human staff while moving toward a more permanently available administration.
