AI influence on Nordic Eurovision song selections

National broadcasters in Sweden and Norway are addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on song submissions for their respective Eurovision Song Contest selection processes.

In Sweden, SVT reported a record-breaking 4,077 entries for Melodifestivalen. Project manager Anders Wistbacka noted suspicious patterns, such as single individuals submitting numerous tracks across various genres, suggesting AI involvement. While SVT has not banned the technology, Wistbacka stated the organization intends to follow music industry standards and expressed confidence that the final 30 selected songs will not be entirely AI-generated, as they must be performed live.

Similarly, Norway’s NRK received approximately 1,500 submissions for Melodi Grand Prix 2027. Head of planning Mads Tjørklep indicated that between 30 and 50 submissions are suspected to be entirely AI-generated, which is prohibited by competition rules. NRK noted that many applicants declared their use of AI and that many entries came from non-professional musicians. The broadcaster does not rule out AI use for technical production or inspiration, citing its growing prevalence in the industry.
