Overview
In late June 2026 the All India Football Federation (AIFF) began a series of governance and branding reforms, including a proposal to rename the body as the Football Federation of Bharat and to adopt new national symbols pending Ministry and FIFA approval. The same meeting scheduled the ISL 2026‑27 season to start on 4 September with a full home‑and‑away format and opened negotiations on a club‑led commercial model. On 8 July Deputy Secretary‑General M Satyanarayan announced that India’s men’s team would miss the Asian Games after failing to meet the Ministry’s ranking requirement, and confirmed that three clubs – FC Goa, NorthEast United FC and Sporting Club Delhi – would assume commercial rights for the league while the AIFF retained regulatory oversight. Later that day the AIFF and all 14 ISL clubs signed a landmark agreement transferring day‑to‑day commercial operations to a newly created Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). Each club will pay an annual participation fee of ₹1.1 crore in two instalments (₹55 lakh each), the first due 20 July and the second 14 August, and retains a unilateral right to exit after two years. The AIFF will receive 10 % of net profit and continue oversight of regulations and player registration. A Request for Proposal has been issued to select a broadcast partner; Zee Sports is reported as the front‑runner. In late July the AIFF released the media‑rights RFP, charging a ₹2 lakh non‑refundable fee for the document and offering two packages – A (including broadcast and live‑production) and B (leaving production to the clubs). The league’s opening match is now slated for 16 October 2026. Clubs may field up to three foreign players in the starting eleven, and the AIFF reaffirmed its target of at least two‑star academy accreditation for 2027‑28, rising to three‑star by 2030.
