AIR Campania bus safety measures

Entities: Mario Casillo · Anthony Acconcia · Guardie Particolari Giurate · AIR Campania

Overview

In July 2026 a bus driver for the regional carrier AIR Campania reported receiving a death threat in Naples, highlighting growing safety concerns for staff. In response, the company expanded its on‑board surveillance program that had been launched in early May 2026. The service now includes Guardie Particolari Giurate (GPG) officers who patrol the buses. During the first two months of the program, eight assaults on staff were recorded, but only one further incident occurred after the GPG deployment, linked to a traffic dispute.

The GPG checked 1,490 of 4,211 rides and achieved full coverage in June, monitoring 44 % of 2,202 rides. Their presence allowed ticket controllers to work more safely, leading to a 33 % rise in passenger checks and a 35 % increase in verbal reports compared with the same period in 2025. On‑board ticket sales grew 24 % to €369,429, and total sales for the period rose by roughly €210,000 year‑on‑year. The experimental phase, overseen by Regional Transport Vice‑President Mario Casillo, will be extended to further improve staff protection and curb fare evasion.
