Air quality degradation in southern Vietnam

Overview

Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding southern provinces have experienced deteriorating air quality and reduced visibility due to haze and heavy dust.

On September 16, monitoring stations reported poor air quality, with the AirVisual app by IQAir recording an air quality index (AQI) of 164, categorized as “unhealthy.” Other local stations reported levels between 114 and 123. At that time, meteorological forecasts also predicted heavy rain and potential flooding for the region.

By September 15 and 18, conditions worsened in several southern locations. IQAir data indicated that air quality reached red alert levels, with Ho Chi Minh City recording an index of 180 and Can Tho recording 187. These levels are classified as “unhealthy for health.” The haze, described as being similar to “thick fog,” has blanketed major streets, leading to resident concerns regarding the lack of official guidance.
