Air quality fluctuations in Delhi-NCR

Overview

In late August, a shift in the monsoon trough brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to 23 Indian states, including the Delhi-NCR region. This precipitation led to a significant improvement in air quality; in Delhi, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached satisfactory levels, with some areas recording an AQI as low as 20.

By late September, air pollution levels began rising across the Delhi-NCR region following the cessation of rainfall. With clear skies and stable temperatures forecasted, pollutants have accumulated. In Greater Noida, the AQI in Knowledge Park-5 reached 330, categorized as ‘very poor’. Elevated pollution levels were also reported by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) in areas such as Chandni Chowk, Anand Vihar, and Bawana, while Ghaziabad also experienced deteriorating air quality.
