AirAsia group route suspensions and restructuring
Overview
AirAsia group airlines have implemented various route suspensions and network adjustments in response to economic and strategic pressures.
In Thailand, Thai AirAsia suspended all nine domestic routes operating from Suvarnabhumi International Airport through September 30, rerouting services to Don Mueang International Airport. The airline attributed this decision to a “more-than-threefold rise in jet-fuel prices” and weakened mid-year travel demand. Other regional carriers have similarly adjusted schedules or increased fares due to fuel costs.
Separately, AirAsia X announced the suspension of its Kuala Lumpur to Sydney service, effective October 25, 2025. The airline cited cost pressures, softer demand, and a strategic effort to retire older, less fuel-efficient widebody aircraft. To offset these changes, the airline plans to increase flight frequencies on other routes, including services between Perth, Denpasar, Melbourne, and Kuala Lumpur.
