Airbnb philanthropic funding for Airbnb.org
Overview
Airbnb has announced a new funding model to support its independent nonprofit, Airbnb.org, with a pledge of $500 million over the next five years. The initiative will be funded by donating approximately 10 cents from every qualifying completed booking on the platform. This model is designed to provide one million nights of free temporary housing annually to individuals in crisis, such as disaster survivors, families seeking medical care, and victims of domestic violence.
Airbnb stated that these donations will not increase costs for guests or reduce payouts to hosts. The company also noted that it will cover the nonprofit’s operating costs to ensure public donations can go directly toward housing. Since its establishment in 2020, Airbnb.org has provided more than 1.6 million nights of free accommodation to over 250,000 people globally.
While the expansion aims to increase the organization’s reach, it has faced scrutiny from housing advocates who argue that Airbnb’s core business model contributes to affordable housing shortages in many cities. CEO Brian Chesky addressed these concerns by stating the company intends to use its natural capabilities to do the “right thing” for those in need.
The new funding mechanism applies specifically to completed stays and excludes canceled bookings, experiences, or other services. To facilitate the program, Airbnb.org works with local nonprofits and government partners to identify individuals in need and provide them with credits to book accommodations. While the guests stay for free, hosts continue to receive payment for their stays.
