AIRC Foundation cancer research campaigns in Italy

Overview

The AIRC Foundation has initiated its 61st Research Days campaign, a national effort running from October 28 to November 15. The campaign, which opened with a ceremony attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, aims to fund more than 770 active oncological research projects through public donations.

Regional initiatives are expanding across Italy. In Verona, pharmacies have joined the “Nastro Rosa” (Pink Ribbon) campaign to support breast cancer research. Participating pharmacies offer pink pins for a minimum donation of two euros and provide informational materials to encourage the use of free public health screening programs. Elena Vecchioni, president of Federfarma Verona, stated that the pharmacies’ role is to disseminate scientific knowledge regarding prevention. Antonio Maria Cartolari, president of the AIRC Foundation for the Veneto, Trentino, and Alto Adige Committee, noted that while medical progress has increased five-year survival rates from 78% in 1992 to 89.5% today, awareness of screening remains vital.

In Reggio Calabria, volunteers are organizing a fundraising event titled “i Cioccolatini della ricerca” on November 7 and 8. Located in Piazza San Giorgio and Piazza Camagna, the initiative allows contributors to purchase Venchi dark chocolates for a minimum donation of 15 euros or provide free donations at volunteer gazebos. This event supports the broader goal of aiding 5,400 researchers across 96 Italian institutions. AIRC remains the primary non-profit funder of oncological research in Italy, providing approximately 70% of total funds for competitive research.
