Akmal Saleh defamation lawsuit settlement
Overview
A Malaysian High Court ordered UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to pay RM300,000 to Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok. The ruling followed a lawsuit filed in October 2024 regarding defamatory TikTok statements made by Akmal in September 2024 concerning halal certification and Islamic practices. The court also issued an injunction against further defamatory remarks and ordered the removal of the disputed content.
To settle the damages and legal costs, Akmal announced plans to sell personal assets, including a motorcycle for RM150,000 and tilapia fish stock for approximately RM30,000. While supporters have donated RM173,733.61 to him, Akmal stated he will not use these funds for the legal settlement, intending instead to donate the contributions to people in need.
