Alaska avalanche dog rescue

Overview

Following an avalanche in Alaska’s Chugach State Park on October 10, a four-year-old huskydoodle named LouLou (also identified as Lulu) was rescued after being missing for approximately 50 hours.

The avalanche swept two experienced climbers down a 150-meter mountain ridge near Eklutna Lake. While the men survived, they sustained serious injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured jaw, a fractured vertebra, and a severe hand injury. While the men were airlifted to a hospital, the dog became lost in the freezing wilderness.

A large-scale search operation was organized by the dog’s owner, Lauren Padawer, involving over 20 volunteers, search dogs, hikers, drones, and helicopters. The rescue was aided by an Apple AirTag attached to the dog's collar, which provided location pings through a satellite network. Although initial data was inaccurate due to the rugged terrain—with one report noting the signal was approximately 800 meters off—Padawer used satellite imagery to refine the search area.

Rescuers Amanda Barker and Dave Beckett eventually spotted the dog from a helicopter. After a brief period of hesitation, LouLou was successfully leashed and airlifted to safety. Despite suffering broken teeth and toes, the dog survived the sub-zero temperatures and has since returned to her home.
