Alba Iulia public transport management and service updates

In Alba Iulia, Romania, local authorities have moved to restructure public transport management and resolve service disruptions. Initially, the municipal council planned to amend a 2021 transport delegation contract to incorporate new assets acquired through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. This amendment aimed to define asset usage by the operator, Societatea de Transport Public SA Alba Iulia, and establish a redeployment fee.

Following a nearly two-month suspension of public transport services that began on June 17, the municipality reached an agreement with a private operator to resume operations. Mayor Gabriel Pleșa announced that the city will provide monthly compensation payments to sustain the service, starting at 2 million lei per month for August and September, and rising to 2.7 million lei per month for the remainder of the year.

As of August 2026, bus services are scheduled to resume on August 17 following a signed convention between the Alba Iulia City Hall and STP Alba Iulia. This agreement aims to resolve the impasse through the resumption of payments to the provider, with services returning to their previous schedules. However, legal disputes regarding outstanding debts between the city hall and the private transport company continue in court.
