Albanian defense industry development and scrutiny

Albanian Defense Minister Ermal Nufi has emphasized the development of a national defense industry as a strategic priority to bolster security and economic growth. Through the state-owned company KAYO, Albania is pursuing joint ventures with international partners, including the production of naval equipment with Fincantieri Albania and the integration of 40 domestically produced vehicles into the Armed Forces.

However, these claims have faced scrutiny regarding the legitimacy of certain manufacturing operations. During parliamentary proceedings, allegations of public deception were raised concerning Advanced Arms Technology (AAT). While Minister Nufi cited AAT as a manufacturer of weapons used in international conflicts, tax documents show the company employs only two individuals, leading critics to argue the staff is insufficient for such production.

Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding potential arms trafficking. Reports indicate that an AAT shareholder discussed importing weapons and ammunition from Sudan for packaging in Albania, prompting calls for investigations into customs documentation and the potential involvement of the Defense Minister in illegal trade.
