Albanian healthcare investigation into maternal death
Overview
The Albanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has launched an independent investigation into the death of Marjana Karolina Bunaj, a 37-year-old pregnant woman. Ms. Bunaj died while being transported from Pogradec to Tirana for specialized medical assistance.
The family has raised concerns regarding the management of the case at the Pogradec maternity hospital, alleging significant delays in medical intervention and transport. Specifically, the victim’s sister, Albina Mekolli, stated that a helicopter transfer was discussed but not utilized due to nighttime conditions, resulting in the patient being moved by ambulance only after 4:00 AM.
The Ministry has committed to a full, impartial assessment of the healthcare process. Officials stated that if “irregularities, omissions, or violations of professional standards are identified,” legal measures will be taken to ensure accountability.
