Albanian military participation in Gaza mission
Overview
The Albanian Parliament initially convened to debate a draft law regarding the participation of the Albanian Armed Forces in the NATO-led Stability Force military operation in Gaza. This legislative item required an absolute majority for approval.
Following the Assembly’s approval and a proposal from the Council of Ministers, President Bajram Begaj decreed Law No. 98/2026. This law authorizes the deployment of an Albanian contingent to the International Stability Force in Gaza, limited to a maximum of 40 personnel. The mission’s objectives include supporting security and stability operations, protecting mission infrastructure, assisting humanitarian efforts, and monitoring the security situation. The legislation also establishes financial provisions, including monthly salaries and additional allowances for participating soldiers.
On October 21, 2026, Albania officially finalized a Participating State Agreement with the International Stabilization Force, the Board of Peace, and the Gaza Working Group. The signing ceremony included Albanian Defense Minister Ermal Nufi, Chief of Defense Lieutenant General Arben Kingji, and International Stabilization Force Commander Jasper Jeffers. This agreement formalizes Albania’s commitment to providing support for security operations and mission planning capabilities to assist in governance, humanitarian efforts, the rule of law, and reconstruction. Albania’s involvement is intended to complement existing contributions from Kosovo and Morocco.
The mission aims to advance security and reconstruction in alignment with a comprehensive peace plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803. Following the signing, which was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Albania Eric Wendt, Albanian liaison officers are expected to be deployed to the region next month.
