Albanian opposition corruption allegations

The Albanian Democratic Party has initiated several calls for investigations into government corruption and financial discrepancies.

Initially, Deputy Klevis Balliu alleged corruption regarding military industry contracts involving the public company KAYO and the private firm Timak Defence. Balliu claimed that vehicles marketed as “Made in Albania” were actually international brands, such as Toyota Land Cruiser and MAN. He questioned the legitimacy of Timak Defence, noting its small employee count and minimal long-term assets, arguing that “With 1,500 euros, a military vehicle factory is not built.” He requested that SPAK investigate the procurement process and potential unfair elimination of competition.

Subsequently, the party expanded its focus to individual officials, calling for a formal investigation into the assets of Minister Mirela Kumbaro. Spokesperson Genta Vangjeli cited discrepancies in financial declarations, specifically regarding property valuations and the ownership of multiple apartments and garages. The party also questioned the source of Kumbaro’s husband’s income, requesting that SPAK and ILDKPKI conduct a full verification of the family’s assets and income sources.
