Albanian political crisis and student protests
Overview
The political situation in Albania escalated as opposition leader Sali Berisha, representing the Democratic Party, demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Berisha expressed the opposition's commitment to supporting ongoing student protests and warned the Prime Minister against using state services or police provocations to diminish support.
In response to the two weeks of continuous student demonstrations, Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, rejected all calls for the Prime Minister’s resignation or early elections. Balla asserted that Rama retains the full support of the Socialist parliamentary group and the electorate. While indicating an openness to dialogue with students, Balla stated that the government requires a concrete list of issues to address and would not engage with those participating in violence.
