In late July 2026, Algeria experienced two severe bus accidents that underscored longstanding road safety problems. On 27 July a passenger bus collided with a semi‑trailer on the steep El Jebahia descent in Bouira Province, injuring eleven people. The crash prompted the Algerian Highways Authority to reference a technical‑economic study aimed at long‑term safety solutions for the hazardous “death slope.”

Just four days later, on 31 July, another bus left the road near El Kerma in Boumerdès Province and fell into a ravine, resulting in at least 25 deaths and dozens of injuries. The incident drew a visit from Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and triggered an investigation by the Protection Civile into possible driver loss of control. Both events follow a pattern of high‑casualty bus accidents in Algeria, highlighting the urgency of implementing effective safety measures on dangerous road sections.

The consecutive crashes illustrate the acute risk posed by steep, poorly engineered routes and have intensified calls for improved signage, road repairs, and possibly new alignments to prevent future tragedies.
