Alhambra digital twin heritage conservation project

Overview

The Junta de Andalucía has unveiled the Digital Twin of the Alhambra, which is described as the first complete digital replica of a World Heritage site. Developed under the Alhambra Living Lab project, this intelligent virtual model utilizes artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), simulation, and real-time data analysis to manage, conserve, and promote the Nasrid monument.

The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Digital Agency of Andalusia, the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, the University of Granada, and the technology company Libelium. The project represents an investment exceeding 2.3 million euros, with 75% of the funding provided by European Union NextGeneration funds through the Spain Living Lab project.

The platform has already demonstrated its utility by monitoring the monument’s architectural behavior and structural state during a recent seismic swarm in the Granada province. This allowed managers to evaluate the efficiency of emergency plans and test protocols using real-time technical data.
