Alleged assault by youth football coach in Romania
Overview
Mihăiță Lungu, coach of the Standard Vaslui youth team, was accused of physically assaulting a player under the age of 14 during a match against ACS Husana Huși. Reports and images suggested Lungu grabbed the child by the neck and lifted him off the ground. Lungu denied the allegations, claiming the interaction was non-violent and intended to provide technical instruction, stating he lifted the player by the shoulders to demonstrate positioning.
Following the incident, the Vaslui County Football Association (AJF Vaslui) suspended Lungu for one year and issued a 3,000 lei fine. The association has also requested that the Romanian Football Federation suspend his coaching license for two years, pending the completion of a safeguarding course. Additionally, local police have opened a criminal investigation into the alleged assault.
