Alleged homophobic attacks in Alicante region

Overview

In August 2026, two separate incidents involving alleged homophobic violence were reported in the Alicante region of Spain.

In Benialí, located in the Vall de Gallinera, five 14-year-old girls were targeted during local festivities. Three youths, aged 16 to 17, reportedly used homophobic slurs and far-right slogans while physically assaulting the group. One victim required hospital treatment for injuries. The incident prompted a protest by over a hundred residents and condemnation from local institutions.

In Alicante, an investigation is following the death of a 27-year-old man at San Juan Beach on August 14. The LGTBIQ+ association ‘Alicante Entiende’ has alleged the killing was a homophobic attack. While a 22-year-old suspect is under investigation for homicide, police reports state that no evidence of a hate crime has been found thus far. The suspect has been released under precautionary measures, including a prohibition from leaving the country.
