Almería-Madrid rail service suspension
Overview
Renfe announced the suspension of the Intercity Almería-Madrid train service, effective September 6, to accommodate infrastructure works in the Despeñaperros area. To mitigate the impact, the company planned two daily bus services between Almería and Linares Baeza, along with a road service between Jaén and Almuradiel. Alvia services on the Almería-Granada-Madrid route were scheduled to continue without modification.
Following the interruption of the direct rail link, the political group Izquierda Unida (IU) Almería formally rejected the replacement of the service with road-based transfers. Representing the Mesa del Ferrocarril, IU coordinator María Jesús Amate described the situation as “railway mourning,” arguing that the bus replacements fail to offer competitive travel times or frequencies. The group has escalated the matter to the Congress of Deputies, demanding that the central government prevent a permanent loss of service frequencies and address the perceived decline in regional connectivity.
