Altroconsumo nut spread nutritional assessment
Overview
Altroconsumo has established a nutritional scoring system designed to evaluate the composition of nut-based spreads. The assessment utilizes an algorithm based on scientific evidence, placing 55% of its weight on nutritional assessment. The system is designed to penalize high levels of sugar, salt, calories, and saturated fats, while rewarding products with higher fiber, protein, and fruit or vegetable content.
Following the development of this system, Altroconsumo applied it to a nutritional analysis of over 120 products, including almond, peanut, hazelnut, and pistachio varieties. The study compared major brands against supermarket and discount alternatives.
The results showed that products composed of 100% nuts without added oils or sugars performed best. Almond-based spreads occupied the highest rankings, with the Damiano Bio Amandino 100% toasted almond cream receiving the top score of 93 out of 100. Hazelnut spreads appeared lower in the rankings, while products with higher sugar and additive content received significantly lower scores.
