Alzheimer's and dementia support initiatives
Overview
Support services and awareness initiatives for Alzheimer’s and dementia are expanding across Spain and Ecuador.
In Spain, the Murcia region has seen an expansion of infrastructure through the Association of Friends and Relatives of People with Alzheimer's and other Dementias of Yecla (AFAY), which inaugurated new facilities to host a Personal Autonomy Promotion Service (Sepap). Supported by the Murcian Institute of Social Action (IMAS) with over 250,000 euros in regional funding, this initiative provides approximately 100 new places for elderly individuals. Additionally, the Cieza Association of Relatives of People with Alzheimer's and other Dementias (ACIFAD) conducted awareness campaigns under the slogan ‘The NO is no longer the answer’.
In Seville, Spain, the Asociación Sevillana de Lucha contra el Alzheimer (ASLA) continues to provide cognitive stimulation and caregiver workshops, with upcoming proceeds from the XII Radiolé Awards intended to support its work. In Ecuador, the Fundación TASE is addressing a lack of support centers for a population where dementia is estimated to affect over 100,000 people, with Alzheimer’s accounting for roughly 70% of those cases.
