Amazon drought and logistics in Northern Brazil

Overview

Historical data from 2023 and 2024 shows that low water levels have previously caused container movement in Manaus to plummet by as much as 85%.

In response to these vulnerabilities, Super Terminais has invested approximately R$ 650 million over two years to modernize and expand operations in the Amazonas region. To mitigate the impact of receding river levels, the company utilizes a contingency plan involving floating infrastructure at Itacoatiara to receive containers and forward them to Manaus, ensuring the supply of the Manaus Industrial Pole. Director-General Marcello Di Gregorio noted that current conditions are further complicated by wildfires, which impact navigation visibility and air quality.
