Amazon environmental sustainability initiatives
Overview
Amazon has initiated several environmental sustainability programs focused on water conservation and carbon reduction across the United States and Mexico.
In the United States, the company is investing nearly $400 million in water infrastructure in Eastern Oregon to expand capacity and recharge aquifers. These replenishment projects aim to return or improve 957 million gallons of water annually to the local ecosystem. Furthermore, Amazon is contributing $20 million to the Colorado River Basin Collaborative to support conservation projects in California and Arizona to address drought-related supply and demand gaps.
In Mexico, Amazon is working toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 through logistics decarbonization and circular economy initiatives. This includes expanding its electric vehicle fleet with 50 new last-mile delivery vans in Mexico City and Monterrey by the end of 2026. The company also reported saving over 4 billion liters of water across three Mexican states, including the implementation of a pressure system in Mexico City that has benefited 98,000 people.
