Amazon FTC Prime settlement expansion

Overview

Amazon is expanding its $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding allegations of deceptive Prime enrollment and difficult cancellation processes.

Following a federal court’s approval of a joint motion, the maximum refund per consumer will increase from $51 to $200. The eligibility criteria have been broadened to include customers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during any 12-month period between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2024. This expansion includes millions of additional customers who were previously excluded under original terms that only covered those using fewer than 10 benefits.

Payments are scheduled to be distributed automatically via mailed check or electronic services like PayPal and Venmo starting October 1, 2026. Consumers do not need to file claims or submit paperwork to receive these funds, though recipients are required to redeem their payments within 60 days of issuance.

The settlement includes a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion for consumer redress. If total accepted payments do not reach a specific threshold by February 2027, Amazon may be required to issue supplemental payments to previous recipients to bring their total to $200 by April 2027. Amazon has pledged to complete all distributions by April 2027.
